We followed up the following week (two weeks ago) by breaking down influence into:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-bottom:0;margin-top:0;\">\n<li style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">influence by instilling purpose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">influence by providing direction <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">influence by motivation<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">Purpose has to do with giving followers an aim, end in view, or a consequence. Direction involves showing followers how to reach that goal, or how to fulfil that purpose. Direction involves <u>instructions on how to get somewhere<\/u>. Purpose has to do with the end but direction has to do with the means to the end. Giving purpose inspires and so does giving direction\u2014showing followers how to get from point A to point B. Leaders inspire followers by giving them goals and showing them how to attain them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:#c55a11;\">INFLUENCE BY MOTIVATING<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">It is not enough to give followers an aim (PURPOSE) and show them how to arrive at it (DIRECTION). Leaders must also MOTIVATE followers so they can follow the directions (the means) to attain that aim (the end). This is why the definition of leadership adopted is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">Leadership involves \u201c<u>influencing<\/u> people\u2014by providing <u>purpose<\/u>, <u>direction<\/u>, and <u>motivation<\/u>\u2014while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:#c55a11;\">What does it mean to motivate?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">motivate<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\"> (v.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">1863, &#8220;<u><span style=\"color:#c55a11;\">to stimulate toward action<\/span><\/u>,&#8221; from motive + -ate.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><span style=\"vertical-align:super;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">[1]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">motivation<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\"> (n.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">1873; see motivate + -ion. Perhaps borrowed from German, where motivation is attested by 1854. Psychological use, &#8220;<u><span style=\"color:#c55a11;\">inner or social stimulus for an action<\/span><\/u>,&#8221; is from 1904.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><span style=\"vertical-align:super;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">[2]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">MO&#8217;TIVE<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">, a. [See the Noun.] <span style=\"color:#c55a11;\">Causing motion<\/span>; having power to move or tending to move; as a motive argument; motive power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:36pt;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">MO&#8217;TIVE<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">, n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">1. <u>That which incites to action<\/u>; <u>that which determines the choice<\/u>, or <span style=\"color:#c55a11;\">moves the will<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">2. That which may or ought to incite to action; reason; cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">3. A mover\u2014Webster\u2019s 1828 Dictionary<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">From the above definitions we see that to motivate followers involves stimulating them toward a particular end or goal. It involves inner or social stimulus for an action. One of the rarely used definitions of motive is \u201ca mover\u201d or \u201cto cause motion\u201d of the human will of followers\u2014stimulating or encouraging them towards a particular action. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:#c55a11;\">CAUTION<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">Because motivation tends towards stimulating the will, leaders must be circumspect about \u2018why\u2019 and \u2018how\u2019 they do this. There is a fine line between motivating followers versus manipulating their will against their will. Be careful not to cross the line. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">The will is the preserve of its creator. Pointing it in a way that does not agree with the will of the creator and his plan for the follower will result in eventual retribution from the creator. Leaders <u>will be judged by a higher standard and with greater severity<\/u>. Teachers are influencers because they influence and shape the minds and wills of people. This is what the scripture has to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 .0001pt 36pt;text-align:justify;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">James 3:1 (AMPC)\u00a0\u00a0NOT MANY [<\/span><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:#7f7f7f;\">of you<\/span><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">] should become <strong>teachers<\/strong> (self-constituted censors and reprovers of others), my brethren, for you know that <u>we [<\/u><\/span><u><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:#7f7f7f;\">teachers<\/span><\/u><u><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">] will be judged by a higher standard and with greater severity<\/span><\/u><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\"> [<\/span><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:#7f7f7f;\">than other people; thus we assume the greater accountability and the more condemnation<\/span><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:black;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">Case in point is an example we used last week. Adolf Hitler was able to lead Germany into war. He influenced by giving them purpose and direction. He also motivated them towards attaining that goal by shaping their minds and wills with his ideologies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:#c55a11;\">HOW TO MOTIVATE<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><span style=\"vertical-align:super;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;color:#c55a11;\">[3]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">To motivate your people:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-bottom:0;margin-top:0;\">\n<li style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">Challenge them within reasonable limits with assignments. To do this you must\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">Get to know your people and their capabilities; that way you can tell just how far to push each one. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">Give them as much responsibility as they can handle; then let them do the work without looking over their shoulders and nagging them. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align:justify;margin:0 0 .0001pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\">When they succeed, praise them. When they fall short, give them credit for what they have done and coach or counsel them on how to do better next time. <\/span><span style=\"font-family:'American Typewriter', serif;\"><br
