Welcome to another week of the Transformational\u00a0 Leadership Series.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Four weeks ago, we discussed \u2018Leadership and Influence\u2019. In that installation, we defined leadership using the U.S. Army Leadership Field Manual, as, \u201cinfluencing<\/u> people\u2014by providing purpose<\/u>, direction<\/u>, and motivation<\/u>\u2014while operating<\/strong> to accomplish the mission and improving the organization.\u201d In subsequent weeks, we expanded upon what it means to influence people\u2014by providing purpose<\/u>, direction<\/u>, and motivation:<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This week, we continue with expanding further on the above stated definition of leadership\u2014specifically focusing on the word \u2018operating<\/strong>\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

RECAP<\/span><\/p>\n

We have already explained that leadership has to do with influencing people. Influencing involves giving people a goal, aim or end (purpose) and showing them how to attain that goal (direction). It also involves stimulating people toward the action(s)\u00a0 that will result in the fulfillment of the purpose (motivation). This must be done \u201cwhile operating<\/strong> to accomplish the mission and improving the organization\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OPERATING<\/span><\/p>\n

Actions taken to influence others serve to accomplish operating<\/strong> actions, those actions you take to achieve the short-term goal of accomplishing the mission\u2014 U.S. Army Leadership Field Manual<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The individual actions taken by each inspired team member to attain the ultimate mission is what is referred to as operating. It involves:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. planning and preparing (laying out the work and making the necessary arrangements)<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. executing (doing the job)<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. assessing (learning how to work smarter next time)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The above points are \u00a0taken from the U.S. Army Leadership Field Manual. Other leadership books use another approach based on French industrialist Henri Fayol\u2019s five functions of management, four of which are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Leadership requires all the above\u2014even when it has to do with accomplishing short term goals that add up to the fulfilling of the bigger mission.
