Getting the Definitions Right<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

CHRISTIANITY<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Christianity is based on the Bible, the Word of God. Its definition is not subject to individual preference but what the scriptures say it is. Valid and accurate Christianity is the demonstration and display of the virtues, excellences and perfections of Christ on earth (1 Peter 2:9 AMPC). Christianity isn\u2019t a religion at all; it\u2019s the outworking of the vital life of God in a recreated being born from the seed or sperm of God. Christianity is Christ alive in you; it\u2019s a relationship. And just as your relationship with your earthly parents isn\u2019t a religion, your relationship with God isn\u2019t a religion. In Christianity, you have the divine life of God, and you\u2019re in an everlasting fellowship with Him. Christianity is, in essence, a walk of righteousness.<\/span><\/p>\n

NATURE VERSUS ACTIONS\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

First, let us establish that there is a difference between actions (conduct) and nature. Actions flow out of nature. Righteousness and Sin have to do with nature and not primarily conduct or acts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some define sin primarily as acts such as<\/span>\u00a0adultery, masturbation, stealing, and other vices<\/span>. They define righteousness as\u00a0<\/span>giving, attending church, reading your bible, praying in tongues<\/span>, being kind, patient, longsuffering etc.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is incorrect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bible tells us that a child born just a second ago is a sinner because of Adam\u2019s sin\u2014the original sin. If so, how can a person who has committed no acts whatsoever be a sinner? Sin is thus innate. It\u2019s a nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To understand this, let’s define \u201cnature\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n

NATURE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Webster\u2019s Dictionary define nature as\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0essence<\/strong>, essential\u00a0qualities<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0attributes<\/strong>\u00a0of a thing, which\u00a0constitute<\/strong>\u00a0it what it is; as the nature of the soul; the nature of blood; the nature of a fluid; the nature of plants, or of a metal; the nature of a circle or an angle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When we speak of the nature of man, we understand the peculiar\u00a0constitution<\/strong>\u00a0of his body or mind, or the\u00a0qualities<\/strong>\u00a0of the species which distinguish him from other animals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When we speak of the nature of a man, or an individual of the race, we mean his particular\u00a0qualities or constitution<\/strong>; either the peculiar temperament of his body, or the affections of his mind, his natural appetites, passions, disposition or temper.<\/span><\/p>\n

A person\u2019s nature is their very essence. It informs their disposition, character, natural frame. Their nature is their specie, sort or genus. Your birth determines your nature. If a cat gave birth to you, you will not have the nature of a dog. You\u2019ll naturally have the natural appetites, passions, disposition, qualities or constitution of what gave birth to you. Your nature is your kind. God made everything to reproduce after their kind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gen 1:11<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(KJV)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed,\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span><\/em>\u00a0the fruit tree yielding fruit\u00a0after his kind<\/strong>, whose seed\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span><\/em>\u00a0in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here we see that the nature or the kind is connected to the seed\/sperm that produced you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gen 1:24<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(KJV)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature\u00a0after his kind<\/strong>, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth\u00a0after his kind<\/strong>: and it was so.<\/span><\/p>\n

Humans, through their seed, produce other humans according to their kind. Goats produce goats, and plants also give birth after their kind. In like manner, when God decided to have children, He can only produce after His Kind because of His Seed that produces them. The nature of the seed creates\/produces the nature of the offspring.<\/span><\/p>\n

Act 17:29 states concerning born-again believers that \u201cwe are the offspring of God\u201d. What nature, then, do the offspring of children of God have?<\/span><\/p>\n

Different translations used different synonyms of the word nature, but they all concede that the offspring of God partake or share in His Divine Nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The born-again saint has the nature of the seed that produced them.<\/span><\/p>\n

1Pe 1:23<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(AMPC)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0You have been regenerated (born again),\u00a0not from a mortal origin (seed, sperm),<\/strong>\u00a0but from\u00a0one that is immortal<\/strong>\u00a0by the\u00a0ever<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong>living<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0lasting\u00a0Word of God<\/u><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

When a person does not understand this nature, as shown in the scriptures, they will live against their new nature\u2014thinking they are still mere men or human. The scriptures were given to us as a spiritual mirror that shows us our new nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

1Co 13:12<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(AMPC)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0For now we are looking in\u00a0a mirro<\/strong>r that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection [<\/span>of reality as in a riddle or enigma<\/span><\/em>], but then [<\/span>when perfection comes<\/span><\/em>] we shall see in reality\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0face to face! Now I know in part (imperfectly), but then I shall know\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0understand fully\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0clearly known\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0understood [<\/span>by God<\/span><\/em>].<\/span><\/p>\n

No wonder when the Corinthians acted contrary to their nature, the Apostle stated:<\/span><\/p>\n

1Co 3:3<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(AMPC)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0For you are still [<\/span>unspiritual,\u00a0having the nature<\/strong><\/span><\/em>]\u00a0of the flesh<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0[<\/span>under the control of ordinary impulses<\/span><\/em>]. For as long as [<\/span>there are<\/span><\/em>] envying and jealousy\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0wrangling and factions among you, are you not unspiritual\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0of the flesh, behaving yourselves after a\u00a0human standard<\/strong>\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0like\u00a0mere <\/strong>(unchanged)\u00a0men<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n

If the divine nature could be summarized, it would be summarized as Righteousness\u2014hence Christianity being defined as the walk of righteousness. The righteous walk by faith and not by sight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hab 2:4<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(AMPC)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Look at the proud; his soul is not straight\u00a0or<\/em>\u00a0right within him, but the [<\/span>rigidly<\/span><\/em>] just\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0the [<\/span>uncompromisingly<\/span><\/em>]\u00a0righteous<\/strong>\u00a0man shall live by his\u00a0faith<\/strong>\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0in his faithfulness. [<\/span>Rom 1:17<\/span>;\u00a0<\/span>Gal 3:11<\/span>]<\/span><\/p>\n

RIGHTEOUSNESS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are different kinds of righteousness, including what the scriptures define as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • the righteousness of the Law (requires works and goodness from the Law of Moses) and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • the righteousness which is of faith (rests entirely on the riches of the kindness of God\u2019s Grace)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Rom 4:5<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(KJV)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his\u00a0faith<\/strong>\u00a0is counted for righteousness.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The first one is earned by works, and the last one is by faith and a gift from God to those who accept His substitutionary work on their behalf.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What is real righteousness? It is the nature of God<\/strong>, and the scripture states of the Christian that S\/he is the righteousness of God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    2Co 5:21<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(KJV)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0For he hath made him\u00a0<\/span>to be<\/span><\/em>\u00a0sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made\u00a0the righteousness of God<\/strong>\u00a0in him.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This is why Apostle Paul taught his followers to:<\/span><\/p>\n

    1Co 15:34<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(KJV)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Awake to righteousness<\/strong>, and sin not<\/span>; for some have not the knowledge of God<\/span>: I speak\u00a0<\/span>this<\/span><\/em>\u00a0to your shame.<\/span><\/p>\n

    He wanted them to understand and live in line with their new nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    DEFINING RIGHTEOUSNESS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Righteousness is the\u00a0nature<\/strong>\u00a0of God that defines His\u00a0character<\/strong>\u00a0and ways of doing things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    It is the rightness of God, His\u00a0attribute<\/strong>\u00a0of always being right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    This nature<\/strong> and attribute<\/strong> of God when imparted to the human spirit at the new birth gives him right-standing with God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Right-standing refers to the right or ability<\/strong> to stand in the presence of God without sin, death, guilt, fear, inferiority, or condemnation. Now, you can talk to the Lord in fellowship and even ask Him questions; you\u2019re bold in His presence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Righteousness is God\u2019s character, ability<\/strong> and attribute<\/strong> of being right and perfect. How He thinks, what He says, and what He does is always right, because He\u2019s God, and He could never be wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

    When Adam sinned, why was he driven from the presence of God? He lost his standing before God. He fell from the nature of God. Why did Jesus come? To restore broken fellowship and right standing before God\u2014and to give God his dream of a family.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Righteousness and The Two Testaments<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    As stated, prior there are two types of righteousness spoken of in the Pauline epistles, namely\u2014the righteousness which is of the law of Moses found in the Old Covenant or Old Testament, and then there is the righteousness which is of faith prophesied and attested by the law and the prophets\u2014but realized in the New Testament after Jesus Christ\u2019s death and resurrection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    What is a Testament?\u00a0<\/span>According to Webster’s 1828 dictionary, a testament is defined thus:<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>A solemn authentic instrument in writing, by which a person\u00a0declares his will as to the disposal of his estate and effects after his death<\/strong>. This is otherwise called a Will.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    This is why the New Testament was inaugurated only when its testator died\u2014the Lord Jesus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Heb 9:16-17<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(KJV)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    16<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0For where a testament\u00a0<\/span>is,<\/span><\/em>\u00a0there must also of necessity be\u00a0the death<\/strong>\u00a0of the testator.<\/span><\/p>\n

    17<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0For a testament\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span><\/em>\u00a0of force after men are dead<\/strong>: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Heb 9:18-22<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(AMPC)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    18<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0So even the [<\/span>old<\/span><\/em>] first covenant (God’s will) was not inaugurated\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0ratified\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0put in force without the shedding of blood.<\/span><\/p>\n

    19<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0For when every command of the Law had been read out by Moses to all the people, he took the\u00a0blood of slain calves and goats<\/strong>, together with water and scarlet wool and with a bunch of hyssop, and sprinkled both the Book (the roll of the Law and covenant) itself and all the people,<\/span><\/p>\n

    20<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Saying these words: This is\u00a0the blood that seals\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0ratifies the agreement<\/strong>\u00a0(the\u00a0testament<\/strong>, the covenant) which God commanded [<\/span>me to deliver to<\/span><\/em>] you. [<\/span>Exo 24:6-8<\/span>]<\/span><\/p>\n

    Heb 9:15<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(AMPC)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0[<\/span>Christ, the Messiah<\/span><\/em>] is therefore the Negotiator\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0Mediator of an [<\/span>entirely<\/span><\/em>] new agreement (testament, covenant), so that those who are called\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0offered it may receive the fulfillment of the promised everlasting inheritance\u2014since a death has taken place which rescues\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0delivers and redeems<\/em>\u00a0them from the transgressions committed under the [<\/span>old<\/span><\/em>] first agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Testaments are legal documents\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0show\u00a0<\/span>heirs what belongs to them. They also contain definitions of terms.<\/span><\/p>\n

    For example, the law of Moses is based on works, while the New Testament is based on faith. So in the law of Moses, sin is simply defined as breaking any of the laws<\/span>\u2014not matching up when it comes to works. However, in the NT, Apostle Paul<\/span>\u00a0defines sin differently. He describes it as<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Rom 14:23<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(KJV)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because\u00a0<\/span>he eateth<\/span><\/em>\u00a0not of faith:\u00a0for whatsoever\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>is<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0not of faith<\/span> is sin<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Gal 5:6<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(KJV)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but\u00a0faith<\/span> which worketh by love<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Here we see the centrality of faith in this New Testament. Sin in the NT, thus, is anything done independently and apart from faith. Why? Because in the NT, the righteous walk by faith, not sight or sensory perception. Faith always works by love. So whatever we do that is not motivated by love and done in faith is sin. The definitions take into account the spirit of the testament in which it is situated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Just as the definition of righteousness in the OT is based on works<\/strong>, so is that testament\u2019s definition of sin based on works. As the definition of righteousness in the NT is based on faith<\/strong>, so is the definition of sin in the NT based on the absence of faith. Another distinguishing factor is in the OT, righteousness is earned, but in the NT, it\u2019s a gift<\/strong>. In the OT, sin comes upon all men because of the original sin or disobedience of the first Adam. Likewise, in the NT, righteousness comes upon all on the basis of the obedience of the Last Adam Jesus Christ.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Rom 5:12-21<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(AMPC)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    12<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Therefore, as sin came into the world\u00a0through one man<\/span><\/strong>, and death as the result of sin, so death spread\u00a0to all men<\/strong>, [<\/span>no one being able to stop it or to escape its power<\/span><\/em>] because all men sinned.<\/span><\/p>\n

    15<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0But God’s\u00a0free gift<\/strong>\u00a0is not at all to be compared to the trespass [<\/span>His grace is out of all proportion to the fall of man<\/span><\/em>]. For if many died through one man’s falling away (his lapse, his offense), much more profusely did God’s grace and the\u00a0free gift<\/strong>\u00a0[<\/span>that comes<\/span><\/em>] through the undeserved favor of the one Man Jesus Christ\u00a0abound\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0overflow to\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0for<\/strong>\u00a0[<\/span>the benefit of<\/span><\/em>]\u00a0many<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    16<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Nor is the\u00a0free gift<\/strong>\u00a0at all to be compared to the effect of that one [<\/span>man’s<\/span><\/em>] sin. For the sentence [<\/span>following the trespass<\/span><\/em>] of one [<\/span><\/span>man<\/span><\/em><\/span>]<\/span> brought condemnation, whereas the\u00a0free gift<\/strong>\u00a0[<\/span>following<\/span><\/em>] many transgressions\u00a0brings justification<\/strong>\u00a0(an act of righteousness).<\/span><\/p>\n

    17<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0For if because of one man’s<\/span> trespass (lapse, offense) death reigned through that one<\/span>, much more surely will those who receive [<\/span>God’s<\/span><\/em>] overflowing grace (unmerited favor) and\u00a0the free gift of righteousness<\/strong>\u00a0[<\/span>putting them into right standing with Himself<\/span><\/em>] reign as kings in life through the one Man Jesus Christ<\/span> (the Messiah, the Anointed One).<\/span><\/p>\n

    18<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Well then, as one man’s<\/span> trespass [<\/span>one man’s false step and falling away led<\/span><\/em>] to condemnation for all men, so one Man’s<\/span> act of righteousness [<\/span>leads<\/span><\/em>] to acquittal\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0right standing with God and life for all men.<\/span><\/p>\n

    19<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0For just as by\u00a0one man’s<\/span> disobedience<\/strong>\u00a0(failing to hear, heedlessness, and carelessness) the\u00a0many were constituted sinners<\/strong>, so by\u00a0one Man’s<\/span> obedience<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0many will be constituted righteous<\/strong>(made acceptable to God, brought into right standing with Him).<\/span><\/p>\n

    20<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0But then Law came in, [<\/span>only<\/span><\/em>] to expand\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0increase the trespass [<\/span>making\u00a0<\/span><\/em>21<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0So that, [<\/span>just<\/span><\/em>] as sin has reigned in death, [<\/span>so<\/span><\/em>] grace (His unearned and undeserved favor) might reign also through righteousness (right standing with God) which issues in eternal life<\/span> through Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) our Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Sin produces death, but righteousness produces the life consistent with the nature of God<\/span>. God’s nature is life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    2Ti 1:10-11<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(AMPC)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
